We take positive steps to encourage people from all backgrounds to apply to Beam. Where possible, we want to remove the barriers which may prevent someone from undertaking training and work in their chosen career. To achieve this we: 

  • Make every effort to recruit new members from minority groups. This is done through targeted outreach work and focused publicity.
  • Carefully consider what further equipment or provisions are necessary for each member to successfully complete training. This could be funding childcare for a single mum, or arranging a translator for an important exam. 
  • Offer information on a wide range of training courses and centres. This allows us to match any special needs and preferences of our members with the practicalities of the training and work goal being discussed.
  • Ensure meeting places are accessible - for instance, by making accommodations for those with physical impairments or for those accompanied by young children.
  • Anonymise campaigns for members if their safety would be in any way compromised by having a public profile on the internet (eg survivors of domestic abuse). 
  • Take care over how our members are presented on our site and in the press. We want to challenge the stigma and stereotypes surrounding homelessness, not add to them.
  • We work with people in a positive and open-minded way. We focus on the future, not the past, and how we can best support someone to reach their goals regardless of background.
